The International Academy of Sacred Music was established by Michael Procter in 1992 and has been under his direction ever since. It provides a unique opportunity to study, in the heart of Venice, music created in and for the city and its magnificent Basilica. The 2011 Academy - the 20th - will include sacred music by Andrea Gabrieli and some of his pupils and colleagues, including Hans Leo Hassler and Gregor Aichinger, as well as Orlandus Lassus. A course for very experienced choral singers with very good sightreading. With a concert on Zattere and the annual High Mass in the Basilica. Details subject to confirmation. WORKSHOP BY PETER PHILLIPS

The World Sacred Music Festival with the collaboration of the Accademia Musicale di Firenze, organises a Concert of the Ensemble Opera Polifonica conducted by the renowned director Peter Phillips - principal conductor of the famous ensemble “The Tallis Scholars” and specialized in the interpretation of the Renaissance repertoire. This concert will be the result of a Workshop of Polyphonic music based on the concert programme and held by Maestri Raffaele Puccianti and Peter Phillips. This workshop, which will end with a concert in Florence on 20th April 2011 for the World Sacred Music Week Festival, will be open to 2 Soprano, 2 Alto/Contro tenors, 3/4 Tenors and 3 Basses. Participans will join the Ensemble Opera Polifonica to create an ensemble of 24 singers: please note the Requiem by De Victoria will be sung by 3 soprani I, 3 soprani II, 4 alti, 3 tenor I, 3 tenor II, 4 bass. The rest of the program will be sung by the entire group. The vocal roles will be selected though auditions which will be held by Maestro Raffaele Puccianti in Florence on 12th March 2011. Scores will be sent to applicants by mail (pdf files). Location for the selection is: Accademia Musicale di Firenze, via Adriani 27/29, 50126 Firenze. The audition will consist of vocal exercises and works from the concert repertoire.

PETER PHILLIPS has made an impressive if unusual reputation for himself in dedicating his life's work to the research and performance of Renaissance polyphony. Having won a scholarship to Oxford in 1972, Peter Phillips studied Renaissance music with David Wulstan and Denis Arnold, and gained experience in conducting small vocal ensembles, already experimenting with the rarer parts of the repertoire. He founded the Tallis Scholars in 1973, with whom he has now appeared in over 1600 concerts and made over 50 discs, encouraging interest in polyphony all over the world. As a result of his work, through concerts, recordings, magazine awards, publishing editions of the music and writing articles, Renaissance music has come to be accepted for the first time as part of the mainstream classical repertoire.
Apart from the Tallis Scholars, Peter Phillips continues to work with other specialist ensembles. Amongst others he has appeared with the Collegium Vocale of Ghent, the Netherlands Chamber Choir, the Choeur de Chambre de Namur, the Finnish Radio Choir, Musix of Budapest, the Studio de Musique ancienne de Montreal and numerous others around the world. Peter also works extensively with the BBC Singers with whom he gave a Promenade concert, in collaboration with the Tallis Scholars, from the Royal Albert Hall in July 2007, which was broadcast live and attended by over five thousand people. He gives numerous master-classes and choral workshops every year around the world and is also Artistic Director of the Tallis Scholars Summer Schools - annual choral courses based in Oakham (UK), Seattle (USA) and Sydney (Australia) dedicated to exploring the heritage of renaissance choral music, and developing a performance style appropriate to it as pioneered by The Tallis Scholars. Peter has recently been appointed Director of Music at Merton College, Oxford, where the new choral foundation he helped to establish began singing services in October 2008.
In addition to conducting, Peter Phillips is well-known as a writer. For many years he has contributed a regular music column (as well as one on cricket) to The Spectator. In 1995 he became the owner and Publisher of The Musical Times, the oldest continuously published music journal in the world. His first book, English Sacred Music 1549-1649, was published by Gimell in 1991, while his second, What We Really Do, an unblinking account of what touring is like, alongside insights about the make-up and performance of polyphony, was published in 2003.
Peter Phillips has made numerous television and radio broadcasts. Besides those featuring The Tallis Scholars (which include live broadcasts from the 2001, 2003, 2007 and 2008 Proms, the 2007 Edinburgh Festival, the Aldeburgh Festival and the Bath Festival), he has appeared several times on the BBC's Music Weekly and on the BBC World Service, on Kaleidoscope (BBC Radio 4), on Today (BBC Radio 4), National Public Radio in the US and on German, French and Canadian radio, where he has enjoyed deploying his love of languages. In 1990 ITV's The South Bank Show featured Peter's 'personal odyssey' with the Tallis Scholars; while in 2002 they made a special television documentary for the BBC about the life and times of William Byrd.
In 2005, Peter Phillips was made a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Minister of Culture, a decoration intended to honour individuals who have contributed to the understanding of French culture in the world. In 2006, his song-cycle for contralto 'Four Rondeaux by Charles d'Orleans' was premiered in the Guggenheim, New York, to critical acclaim. In 2010 Peter Phillips was made a Fellow for Life of Merton College, Oxford.

RAFFAELE PUCCIANTI, founder and conductor of the ensemble Opera Polifonica of the Accademia Musicale di Firenze, conductor of the Polifonici Senesi choir in Siena and the Coro Schola Cantorum dell’Associazione Musicale “Carmen Campori” in Incisa Valdarno. He studied choral conducting with M° Roberto Gabbiani and in 1996 gained a distinction in the professional diploma for choral conductors held by the “G. D’Arezzo” Foundation, the EU and Regione Toscana, studying with maestros René Clemencic, Gary Graden, Diego Fasolis, Marco Balderi, Francesco Luisi, Romano Pezzati, Piergiorgio Righele. He went on to have lessons with Peter Phillips and G. Morgan (The “Tallis Scholars”) at the Corso Corale Internazionale in Rimini and the Hilliard Ensemble at Amici della Musica in Florence. He has also studied orchestra conducting with M° Piero Bellugi. Born in Florence in 1972, he studied music at the L.Cherubini conservatoire in Florence, graduating with distinction in piano in the class of Rosa Maria Scarlino and studying composition and score reading with Salvatore Sciarrino and Romano Pezzati. He took part in masterclasses in piano at St Petersburg conservatoire with Murina Ek. Alexeevna and in Genova with Massimiliano Damerini and has won several national competitions. As a pianist and in chamber groups he has held concerts in Italy and abroad, playing with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Arad State (Romania) and with the Orchestra of the L. Cherubini conservatoire in Florence, for G.A.M.O and the Accademia Bartolomeo Cristofori in Florence, in Stresa, Verona and Naples and in a trio (flute, cello and pianoforte) for the Italian Swiss conservatoire in Lugano. As conductor of the Opera Polifonica of the Accademia Musicale di Firenze he has performed many concerts in Italy and abroad entirely dedicated to renaissance music and flemish polyphony. In 2003 he staged The Tempest with music by H. Purcell and in 2002 he filmed a documentary on the Bargello museum in Florence for D.N.A International and RAI, broadcast by RAI Educational and other european broadcasters. In 1998 he performed live Missa Papae Marcelli by G. P. da Palestrina for the radio 3 Suite transmission and in 2004 he represented the town of Florence to celebrate its twinship with Reims (France). For the Bongiovanni label he has recorded several CDs, including one dedicated to G. P. da Palestrina containing the mass “O Regem Coeli” from the new National Edition of Works by Palestrina, compiled by Maestro Francesco Luisi. This was warmly received by Italian and foreign critics and was reviewed by several important international music magazines including “Musica” and the US “Fanfare Magazine”.
In 2003 he conducted concerts of music by J. S. Bach and D. Buxtehude (1st violin Marco Fornaciari) with the Polifonici Senesi and the Florence Simphonietta orchestra. Again with the Polifonici Senesi he has performed many concerts dedicated to romantic polyphony (Brahms e Mendelssohn) and recorded a CD for the EMA RECORDS label dedicated to Sienese composers from 1500, containing some world premier recordings. In July 2005, with the Polifonici Senesi, he took part in the first modern staged representation of Liederspiel in Die Heimkehr aus der Fremde by F. Mendelssohn with the Orchestra Regionale della Toscana conducted by G. Kòrsten, for the 62nd Settimana Musicale Senese of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana. In December 2009 he prepared, with the Polifonici Senesi and the Opera Polifonica, Magnificat in D maj. by J. S. Bach, played by the Orchestra GMAS Ensemble di Scandicci (Florence) under Volfango Dami. With the Schola Cantorum choir of the Associazione Musicale “Carmen Campori” in Incisa Valdarno he performed Te Deum by J. Haydn in 2001 with the Orchestra “Risonanza” conducted by Carlo Montanaro and held concerts in Brussels, Paris, Prague, Koln, Bethlehem and Jerusalem. He has compiled many transcriptions of ancient polyphony, some of which have been performed by Peter Phillips for the BBC SINGERS on live radio (BBC). In September 2009 he held, alongside Peter Phillips and the famous group “The Tallis Scholars”, an important Masterclass in renaissance polyphony, organised by Amici della Musica di Firenze and the Opera del Duomo in Florence. This seminar closed with a final concert as part of the “Settembre Musica” series organised by Amici della Musica di Firenze and “O Flos Colende”. From 2005 - 2006 he conducted the Ateneo choir at the Università degli Studi di Siena. Since 2002 he has worked with the Centro “F. Busoni” in Empoli for choral projects in secondary schools. Since February 2010 he has conducted Harmonia Cantata in Florence, with whom he has held some productions (W. A. Mozart: Requiem and A. Vivaldi: Gloria in re magg.) with the Orchestra da Camera Fiorentina and the Polska Iuventus Orchestra with conductors Giuseppe Lanzetta, Andrea Fornaciari and Marco Balderi. He teaches at the Accademia Musicale di Firenze.
